Students and their work

Abstract

This article analyzes the meaning students attach to their employment. The study is limited to a group of young people enrolled in four degree programs offered by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM): oral surgery, economics, physics and history. The study is interpretative and uses tools from qualitative methodologies, primarily in-depth interviews. Three major areas of meaning are distinguished: working out of need, working as a learning and professional experience, and working for personal reasons.

Resumen

En este artículo se analiza el sentido que los estudiantes que trabajan le confieren a su propio empleo. El análisis se delimita a un grupo de jóvenes inscritos en cuatro carreras que ofrece la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM): cirugía dental, economía, física e historia. El análisis se sitúa al interior de las corrientes interpretativas. Se utilizan las herramientas propias de las metodologías cualitativas, principalmente la entrevista en profundidad. Se distinguen tres grandes ámbitos de sentido del trabajo: por necesidad; como aprendizaje y experiencia profesional y por razones de tipo personal .
